D.D. De Jager
Inc. Practice
Our focus is on optimizing the body’s functionality by matching it with the appropriate orthotic and prosthetic devices. We believe that successful outcomes come from our expertise, care, service, and quality products.
WE OFFER
Orthotics
We pair people with the correct braces which ensures successful rehabilitation outcomes. The practice stocks an extensive range of braces and splints from the world’s leading countries including Germany, Italy, Iceland, Switzerland and South Africa.
Compression Therapy
Compression therapy is a treatment option for reducing oedema, swelling and other associated conditions affecting the upper and lower limb (both arms and legs). These garments apply graduated compression to the limb to reduce swelling and regulate blood flow. Compression therapy improves and restores the velocity and viscosity of blood flow; it also reduces and prevents oedema. This treatment plan is also commonly used in preventing venous diseases and lowers the risk of pulmonary embolisms.
Upper Limb
Upper limb orthotics are designed to stabilize, protect, and improve the function of your arm, hand or fingers or a combination thereof. This is achieved by bracing your arm, hand, or finger which, depending on what is required, reduces the affected area’s range of motion to allow healing or supports the area which helps in reducing pain and discomfort. We offer our professional services by assessing and fitting upper limb orthotics, assuring you receive the correct treatment option.
Lower limb
Lower limb orthotics are external devices that support and improve the function of the lower body. Lower Limb orthotics are used to assist gait, reduce pain, decrease weight bearing control movement, control movement and minimize progression of the deformity skills and assist ambulatory patients in achieving near-to-normal gait patterns in walking.
Diabetics and Orthotic Care
As a diabetic, it is important for you to look after your feet because any wound that forms under your foot will take longer to heal due to the circulatory issues you have or may develop. We have a variety of orthotic devices ranging from total contact foot orthotics, designed to reduce shear forces to the soles of your feet, as well as diabetic shoes and socks. Should you develop an ulcer or have an existing one we have specially designed offloading shoes and foot orthotics to help off load the wound site and promote healing. These wound sites need to be constantly monitored, and the insoles may need to be adjusted to provide as much support and offloading as possible.
Custom Made Orthotics
Depending on the diagnosis and the level of the injury or support needed, custom upper or lower limb orthotics can also be manufactured. This is usually done in more severe cases or when an off-the-shelf orthosis will not provide the required stability or will not fit according to the desired specifications. Common procedure of custom bracing is as follows (this will vary depending on the treatment plan and device chosen for each patient):
- Clinical evaluation by the orthotist Casting/moulding
- Manufacturing of the orthosis
- Test fit if needed (depending on the function of the brace)
- Making necessary adjustments
- Manufacturing of final orthosis
- Final fitting
- Follow up in 2 weeks for adjustments
Some examples of Custom-made Orthotics
Foot Orthotics
DD de Jager Inc Practice specialises in providing relief of foot pain & running injuries through the scientific prescription of foot orthotics and specialised footwear. The practice believes in managing not just the effect of foot pain, but the cause of the problem. Through gait analysis, pressure mapping and video analysis we can prescribe effective foot orthotics & footwear solutions.
Cranial Paediatric Helmets
Cranial Remoulding Orthosis is an infantile treatment only that involves a custom-made helmet. The helmet fits to the shape of the head and contains areas of space over the flattened regions. The spaces allow natural growth of the head in these regions over a period of several weeks or months, allowing the structures to correct itself. There are no areas of direct pressure applied therefore ensuring a safe and painless treatment. A head-shape deformity is generally noticed soon after the birth of your baby, within several days, weeks or months. General healthcare practitioners, and you as the parent/s or caregivers will be able to detect an abnormal head shape and/or asymmetries in the facial features and ears that do not resolve in several days. In the treatment of cranial remoulding, we aim for an early initiation to achieve the best outcomes. The ideal age of treatment is 4 to 6 months; however, we can provide a helmet for a baby till the age of 18 months depending on the severity and causative factor.
Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO’s)
Custom AFO’s are designed in cases where specific requirements cannot be achieved by means of an off the shelf AFO brace, or the complexity of the ankle alignment or structure requires a custom design and fit. Common cases where custom bracing will be considered are: Cerebral Vascular accidents (CVA, Stoke), Traumatic Brain Injuries, (TBI)Spinal Cord Injuries, Traumatic Injuries, Nerve Impingement muscle, Dystrophy, (MD)Multiple Sclerosis and (MS)Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

WE OFFER
Prosthetics
Prosthetics are artificial substitutes designed to replace missing parts of the body. They can serve functional purposes, cosmetic reasons, or both. The term “prosthesis” specifically refers to the artificial component itself. They are typically used when a body part is lost due to trauma, disease, or a congenital condition.
Upper and Lower limb
The loss of a limb has a profound impact on the independence, psychological and social impact on a person’s life. Our prosthetics rehabilitation program works to restore independence by combining individualised component selection with a comfortable, functional socket and comprehensive rehabilitation. It is important to work as an Interdisciplinary team when a prosthetic is considered, the team consists of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, bio kineticists, psychologists and Orthopaedic surgeons. By working as a team, we can address the various needs relating to the loss of a limb. Under the direction of our dedicated certified prosthetists every effort is made to ensure function, comfort and an aesthetically pleasing prosthesis. The rehabilitation program offers a broad scope of care that helps individuals set and meet goals and ultimately restore their lifestyles and regain their independence.
Breast Prosthetics
We are passionate to help grow the awareness of breast prostheses & garments for post breast cancer patients. We pride ourselves in providing patients with excellent, professional, and discrete service. Restoring femininity, confidence & ensuring that you are comfortable. Products include specialized breast prostheses, post mastectomy bras and swimwear for mastectomy patients. Breast cancer and lymphoedema is an identified and prevalent condition in South Africa. Every year there is a rising incidence of breast cancer affecting women across the country. The treatment journey is often a complex and challenging process that women endure. Besides the health challenges there is also the psychological impact brought about by the change in body image. A breast prosthesis is an artificial breast form that replaces the shape of all or part of the breast that has been removed and it typically fits into a mastectomy bra. Breast prostheses are made from soft silicone gel which is housed in a thin outer film. They are moulded to resemble the natural shape of a woman’s breast, or part of a breast. The breast prosthesis feels soft and smooth and may include a nipple outline.
